What is a mini-split, ductless air conditioner?
Looking for a new air conditioner but not quite ready for the expense and complex installation of central air?
Unlike central air, mini-split systems require little-to-no ductwork. Central air consumes much more energy to account for the loss in the ductwork, especially if the ducts are not sealed tight or run through an unconditioned space such as an attic.
Mini-split systems can be used almost anywhere. They offer flexibility because they can be hung suspended from the ceiling, mounted flush with a drop ceiling or hung on a wall. The wall mounted units are slim and designed to complement interior décor. They’re quiet, easy to maintain and come with a wireless remote control.
Mini-split systems can be installed for single zone or multi-zone use. They consist of an indoor unit (multiple units for multi-zone) and a single outdoor condenser.
Some units even provide heat for the cold weather months. Like a refrigerator, heat pumps use electricity to pump refrigerant and transfer heat from one space to another. When we transfer heat from within our home to the outdoors, we call it air-conditioning. When we transfer heat from the outdoors to within the home, we call it a heat pump. It’s simply reversing the process. The advanced technology that goes into these units even makes the heating more cost effective than gas or oil-fired units.
